SESSION 1 MARITIME TRANSPORT AND ENVIRONMENT
The first workshop will focus on the environmental aspects of shipping safety, maritime transport and port management, analysing the implementation at local level of relevant international and national regulations.
Topics:
1. Shipping, safety and environment - The role of maritime safety in environmental protection and shipping development; environmental impact of maritime transport, with particular reference to dangerous goods and wastes; ballast water management; special areas and protected zones; ship characteristics and controls; anti-fouling systems and environmental impacts
2. IMO e UE regulations: implementation and future developments - Implementation and future developments of international regulations: OPRC, SOLAS, MARPOL; CLC; FUND, London Convention, …; EU regulations on shipping, safety and environment.
3. Port management - Pollution prevention and control within port activities (ship and port wastes management, dangerous goods handling, noise management, air and water pollution), environmental management systems, Port State Control, environmental management of marinas; international safety and goods control.
4. Marine environment and international law – Marine environment and “polluter must pay” principle; damage evaluation and liability in case of accidental pollution; International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund; case studies.
